Patriots fans growing tired of the team’s contract stalemate with cornerback Christian Gonzalez received good news Saturday, 3,000 miles from Foxborough.
Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon, the other elite cornerback looking for a new contract this offseason, finally got his deal — a four-year extension worth a reported $132 million in new money, for an average of $33 million per year that breaks the cornerback record by about $2 million annually.
Witherspoon’s deal means Gonzalez is now at bat. The parameters have been set and roadblocks have been cleared. Gonzalez even shares the same agent as Witherspoon in Reggie Johnson. This deal should, in theory, happen soon.
Only two factors can continue to hold it up: Gonzalez being a little too greedy, or the Patriots a little too stingy.
