music newsletter

Hey there,

If you didn't already know, I have been writing a sex and dating column, which is far from as glamorous as it sounds. I am forbidden to write in the first person or to detail my own romantic life. But this is a newsletter, so all bets are off, and I'm here to share the greatest tragic love story you'll ever hear about a missed connection in the music scene.

It was a warm girls' night out at Harwood Arms in July; Spain and Portugal were set to face off in a Round of 16 World Cup match. I was wing-womaning for my friend, not particularly interested in meeting my own international inamorato.

Late in the night, a man with a thick accent approached my table, asking for a lighter. I learned he was a playlist curator at Apple Music, a Russian expat stationed in Austin, in town for a few games. After buying the table a round, he sat down, and I learned the playlist he curates is one of my favorites, and I was speaking to the man who has single-handedly shaped my taste in music for years.

We spent all night talking about our favorite bands and the best shows we'd been to. Then he grabbed my phone, looked through my song library, and hand-curated a personal playlist of Russian deep cuts for me. Swoon.

But I never caught his name, and never got a phone number. I've launched a full search party built of journalists, and no one has found anything. We've searched Instagram and LinkedIn; I've even emailed Apple Music's media contact. To no avail; he can't be found. This is my last-ditch effort.

So, if you happen to know a 30-year-old Russian playlist maker at Apple Music who loves soccer and an American Spirit, let me know, and I'll make sure you're invited to the wedding.

A timeline of the Pooh Shiesty and Gucci Mane kidnapping

Gucci Mane was reportedly kidnapped in Dallas in January. An arrest was made in April, and an album from the alleged kidnapper was released this month. Here's your TL;DR.

Don Toliver's Octane World Tour return to Dallas felt like leftovers

The Texas rapper returned to Dallas for the second time in just a couple months, but maybe we should have caught the first stop.

Just announced: The Jonas Brothers are burning up Dallas all over again in November

If history repeats itself, we can expect them to go big and come home for their stop in North Texas.

Local music spotlight

Beginning Again

Brody Price is a local musician, a great gardener and an all-around good person. The artist, who resents capitalism and loves playing local shows, is releasing an album in October under a new label, Gar Hole Records. The first singles, "Breathing Again" and "Beginnings," are out now. The album was made as the artist became sober and chronicles near-death experiences and the toll alcoholism can take on relationships.

Upcoming concerts

In the next few days

  • Benson Boone at American Airlines Center on 8/21  - Depending on how much you're willing to spend on stadium drinks, you could play a very fun drinking game that depends on Boone's affinity for being entirely off the ground during his live show.
  • Santana and the Doobie Brothers on 8/22 - We can't imagine what Rolling Stone's No. 11 Greatest Guitar Player of All Time sounds like live. So we won't imagine; we'll go to the show.

Plan ahead

  • Slayyyter at House of Blues on 9/19 - Pop music's latest "overnight" success story already got upgraded to a larger venue after initially being scheduled for The Echo Lounge & Music Hall. Don't wait on this one, because the show to see the "Worst Girl in America" is likely to sell out.
  • Jack White at the Bomb Factory 10/7  - The half of the White Stripes currently feuding with Charley Crockett about Satanists is coming to Dallas in October. He has a tendency to play "secret" shows and raise a little hell, and what perfect timing?
