Building trust and meeting consumers' needs in commerce media campaigns
Commerce media is entering a new phase, one defined less by rapid expansion and more by operational maturity, EMARKETER analysts and industry leaders say.
  • Commerce media ad spending will reach $83.71 billion in the US this year, accounting for 20.5% of all digital ad spending, according to EMARKETER's June 2026 forecast.
As the channel becomes a core part of marketers' media strategies, the conversation is shifting from whether to invest to how to make those investments deliver measurable business results.
In a new EMARKETER guide titled "Commerce media outlook: What industry leaders see ahead," our analysts and industry leaders give their thoughts about the capabilities brands should prioritize today, the consumer behaviors that will shape tomorrow, and what it will take to succeed as commerce media becomes a permanent pillar of the media mix.
Arielle Feger, a senior analyst at EMARKETER covering retail and commerce media, told us what actually gets consumers' attention and how marketers can build trust.

Walmart’s retail media strength offsets slowest sales gains in years
Walmart’s retail media business powered strong Q2 advertising growth, even as the company’s sales slowed to their lowest rate in years.
Walmart broadened its off-site retail media strategy in Q2, making Walmart Connect’s first-party shopper data available through partners like Yahoo DSP. The partnership lets advertisers programmatically activate Walmart’s retail audience against CTV inventory on Vizio, while Magnite handles supply-side decisioning to reduce signal loss and improve audience matching.
That lets agencies use Walmart’s targeting and measurement capabilities without being locked into its own DSP, opening its retail media ecosystem to more third-party demand.
Walmart is one of retail media’s fastest-growing players, but it still has a long way to go to challenge Amazon’s scale.
  • We forecast Walmart’s ad revenues will increase 31.2% YoY in 2026 and will continue growing in the double-digits through 2028.
  • Its offsite retail media ad revenues, which cover advertising that does not appear on Walmart-owned platforms, are showing particularly strong growth. Offsite revenues will grow 56.4% YoY this year, cooling to 26.7% in 2028.
