Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month
September is Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. VA’s top clinical priority is preventing suicide among all Veterans. Veterans in crisis, whether they are enrolled in VA health care or not, can always show up without an appointment to any of our facilities during business hours. After hours, Veterans in crisis may go to our Emergency Room or any hospital ER.
Thanks to the COMPACT Act, the Department of Veterans Affairs’ will directly furnish, pay for, or reimburse emergent suicide care (to include associated transportation costs) at VA and non-VA facilities for eligible individuals in acute suicide crisis.
Veterans in crisis can always contact the Veterans Crisis Line at 988 then press 1 to receive 24/7 confidential support. Veterans don't have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to connect. Veterans can also chat online or text 838255 at anytime for confidential support. Don't wait. Reach out.
