BATTING LEADOFF

The Red Sox lost three of four games against the Yankees in the Bronx over the weekend and still arrived at Fenway Park on Monday with a 97.5 percent chance of making the playoffs.

The American League pennant race is more of a pennant jog this season. Five teams with losing records are within 5½ games of a wild-card berth, and the AL West winner might be lucky to finish .500.

It helps explain why the Red Sox are playing the long game with four weeks left in the season.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Roman Anthony and Trevor Story knew they didn’t need them to be heroes when they returned, but that didn’t stop either of them from playing the role in the Sox’ come-from-behind 9-8 win in 10 innings Monday over the Mariners at Fenway Park. Julian Benbow has the game story.

STILL ROLLING: Dan Shaughnessy writes that the comeback successes of Story and Anthony should not overshadow another homer by Mickey Gasper, more winning play from Nick Sogard, and two innings of clutch relief from a lefty named Alec Gamboa.

HUGGING IT OUT: Payton Tolle likes warm hugs, so much so that when Mariners designated hitter Dominic Canzone bounced a ground ball back to Tolle in the third inning, the big lefthander recorded the out by giving Canzone a hug. Julian Benbow has the story.

ON THE SHELF: Gasper was back in the lineup Monday after the Sox placed first baseman Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list. Julian Benbow has more in the notebook.

CONTROVERSIAL COMMENTS: Red Sox radio broadcaster Will Flemming apologized Monday, a day after opining his way into a maelstrom of controversy during the Yankees’ 16-1 victory in New York in a crucial matchup between the rivals. Chad Finn has the story.
