Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance Records
In accordance with the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) and Fire Prevention Code of the County of Fairfax (FPCCF), inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of all fire protection systems within a building, structure, or property shall be performed and documented as outlined in the applicable referenced standard listed in Section 901.6.1 of the SFPC and FPCCF that states the following:
901.6.1 Standards. Fire protection systems shall be inspection, tested, and maintained in accordance with the referenced standards listed in table 901.6.1.
The referenced standards for the different types of fire protection systems provide information concerning the system and associated components and inspection and test interval for systems and components that may be in a building, structure, or property. Table 901.6.1, found below, lists the type of fire protection system, reference standard, and link to the specific chapter that applies to the system. (NFPA links are viewable by NFPA subscribers.)
Currently, the Office of the Fire Marshal requires that upon completion of the annual inspection and test of all fire protection systems applicable to the building, structure, or property, the complete records of the inspections, tests, and results shall be uploaded to the Planning and Land Use System (PLUS) portal. Click this link for additional information concerning how to set up an account and how to use PLUS for ITM report sharing.
The annual inspections and tests cover all systems and associated components. However, in addition to the annual inspection and test report, there are requirements for inspection and testing intervals that, for some system components and devices, are every three, five, and for some system components, every 12 years. Therefore, those inspections and test shall be submitted at the appropriate internal along with the annual inspection and test report.
To maintain compliance with the SFPC and FPCCF, review the chapter links in the table for awareness of the minimum requirements related to the system and associated components. Failure to inspect, test, and maintain, provide reports, or act in a timely manner to resolve deficiencies will result in inspection fees.
