The result is a rich and spiritually generous invitation to live with greater receptivity and awe. more
Pastor Ardavanis makes a rote case that to honor God, readers should take pains to work with integrity, enthusiasm, knowing that one’s efforts are, albeit indirectly, part of a “grander purpose.” At the same time, Ardavanis emphasizes that one must make time for periodic rest, as modeled by Jesus’s “commitment to time alone, in silence, with God,” Unfortunately, little about the argument feels new. This fails to persuade. more
Composer Russell; Feldman, a preceptor in Yiddish; and Kaplan, a literature professor, collect essays that disrupt the stereotype that Blackness and Jewishness are mutually exclusive. Contributors describe injustices spurred by reductive notions of either identity, and they clarify that Black Jewish identity is not monolithic. They draw out creative commonalities, including “how seamlessly klezmer music connected with blues and jazz,” while remaining frank about prejudice in Israel and the diaspora. This illuminates. more
