Among the lessons offered by the 2026 Red Sox season is a reminder of a baseball team’s capacity for extreme reversals.
For three months, the team scraped shocking depths. Then for two months, the Sox had a run of excellence rarely matched in franchise history. Now, as months dwindle to weeks and eventually the final days of a regular season that the team hopes is a prelude to postseason baseball, another switchback has occurred.
The Red Sox limped to a listless 8-3 loss to the Mariners on Wednesday, a defeat that was the team’s fourth in five games. In that span, the club has been outscored 50-21.
In contrast to the months-long offensive outage that characterized the start of the season, the current, brief skid is a product of a pitching staff derailment.
