First successful AI-assisted operation removes brain tumor

A British man has become the first person to undergo brain surgery with live AI assistance. Rhys Hibbert, 48, was at risk of losing his sight as a benign tumor pressed on his optic nerves, and doctors successfully removed it while avoiding vital blood vessels and nerves. AI analyzed the procedure in real time, highlighting hidden structures and safer areas in which to operate. Researchers hope to develop and roll out the technology more widely to help other patients facing similarly complex surgery.

Natural filter cleans polluted South African river water

An endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle is on the road to recovery after being swept by a strong ocean current from the Gulf of Mexico to Wales. When Rhossi was discovered on a beach in 2023, he weighed just 2 pounds. He was nursed back to health at the Anglesey Sea Zoo and was flown to the Houston Zoo last month for final rehabilitation. Rhossi is now 46 pounds and active and, once he gets over lingering pneumonia, will be returned to the Gulf of Mexico.

Pizzeria creates ‘meal wall’ for neighbors in need

People from around the world are donating to a Michigan pizzeria to provide a hot meal for those who need one. Shanna Crice, manager of Rosco’s Pizza in Union, posted online about receiving a call from someone asking if leftover food was ever thrown away. A follower suggested starting a meal wall, where people could pay for the dinner of someone experiencing hunger. The idea took off, and dozens of $10 meal tickets are now available at Rosco’s for those in need.
