The complex operation to rescue workers from a blocked hydropower tunnel in Nepal had myriad hurdles. An expert involved in the task told us how they managed to pull two men alive from the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project more than a week after flash flooding caused devastation. "It's like layer upon layer of miracles," he said. At least 39 others are thought to be trapped there, with more than 100 still missing across the underground network. The country's disaster agency says that 1,287 bodies have been recovered so far, while an estimated 5,083 remain missing. 

Argentina's president Javier Milei has threatened to impose sanctions on firms that exploit oil close to the British overseas territory the Falkland Islands, over which the two countries fought a war in 1982. In a national address, Milei said the "winds of change" favoured Argentina's claim to the Falklands, emboldened by signs the US might reconsider its stance of neutrality on the issue. The UK government said that "the Falkland Islanders' right of self-determination extends to the right to exploit their own natural resources". 

Claims rooted in superstitions are spreading via social media, with real-world consequences. Our Global Disinformation Unit has analysed data from police forces across six African countries showing that more than 80 people were killed between October 2025 and July this year following false accusations about "genital theft" - rumours that a simple tap on the shoulder can cause a man's genitals to shrink or disappear. Videos of violence against people accused of these alleged incidents then circulate widely online.
