A surprisingly sparse Camden Yards crowd of 19,720 gave Adley Rutschman a standing ovation as he approached the plate in the top of the first inning. Carlos Narváez decided he needed to go talk to Orioles pitcher Brandon Young, letting the applause build as umpire Paul Clemons then fiddled with his mask to let it get a little louder.
“Just to feel that kind of love, it’s really cool,” Rutschman said. “Emotional moment and really special.”
Rutschman wrapped an arm around Narváez in appreciation and got a tap on the helmet in return. Then it was back to business. Rutschman launched the third pitch he saw, a hanging curveball, 377 feet to right field.
