Traveling Exhibit at the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center on display from September 16 - October 24

 Indigenous Perspectives seeks to place the voices and experiences of Virginia’s tribal communities at the center of an active examination of the Library of Virginia’s holdings.
The exhibit will acknowledge and recognize that Virginia’s Indigenous communities have been, and remain a vital part of Virginia’s history and culture.
The eight-panel traveling exhibition with a kiosk and touchscreen monitor is organized around the themes of sovereignty, environment, identity, community, language, and future.
Guided Tours of Ratcliffe-Allison Pozer House
Saturdays: September 26 & October 31
Walk in for a free guided tour through the oldest residence in Old Town Fairfax, built in 1807. Learn the stories of the tradespeople, merchants and community leaders who lived there over the house’s more than 200-year history. The tour is 45 minutes and leads through the first floor only of the house.

 Play Ball: A Historic Baseball Experience
October 24 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
All Ages are welcome
Step up to the plate for an afternoon of America's pastime as it was played more than 150 years ago! Listen to a talk about the early history of baseball from Professor Hardesty of George Mason University, then experience a baseball game played using authentic 19th-century rules and equipment while George Mason University's 8th Green Machine Band performs period music.
Want to play? Take the field and experience 19th-century baseball firsthand! This is a family-friendly event, and players of all ages are welcome to participate. No baseball experience is necessary. Players will learn the rules before taking the field, and all equipment will be provided. Player registration is required.
Prefer to watch? Register as a spectator to enjoy the historic talk and watch the game from the sidelines. Please consider bringing a chair or blanket for seating. Spectator registration is required.

A History Mystery
November 7, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Ages 10-14
Join the staff at Historic Blenheim to solve a history-related mystery! Participants will find clues, solve puzzles, explore the grounds and historic house at Blenheim, all while learning different intelligence and spy techniques across the eras of Fairfax History. Civil War Survival Skills
November 14, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Ages 9-13
Participants will practice the skills that soldiers used to survive long marches over rough terrain in different climates. Participants will learn how to pitch a civil war dog-tent, conduct 19th-century laundry, and drill like a Civil War soldier. Registration required. Cooking Through History: A Taste of Sri Lanka

Explore the history and flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine in this interactive cooking class. Participants will learn traditional techniques for preparing fresh coconut, discover its cultural significance, and work together to create and sample a classic Sri Lankan dish.  From 1861 to 1865, Americans fought each other with a ferocity unseen in the country’s history. The immediate cause of the war was the secession of the Southern states. However, the roots lay in growing tensions over slavery. By the time the last shots were fired, as many as 750,000 Americans had been killed, and four million enslaved people were freed. This traveling banner exhibition, from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, examines the impact of the Civil War on Americans throughout the fractured nation.
