Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy case yesterday after Kevin Reddington's last-ditch appeal was denied by Massachusetts' top court. We are following all the angles, including a statement released by Patrick Clancy's lawyer, and the reaction from President Donald Trump. It's also Labor Day weekend and we're tracking possible scattered showers and a few heavy downpours later today. I'm Kaitlin McKinley Becker, and these are your headlines.

The judge in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial declared a mistrial on Friday, the seventh day of deliberations, after a dramatic last-minute appeal from the defense.

The jury got the case in Massachusetts’ Plymouth Superior Court last Thursday, following nearly two hours of closing arguments. Several times this week, the jury told Judge William Sullivan they were deadlocked, but were instructed to keep working.

Clancy’s defense filed an emergency appeal to Massachusetts’ highest court, the Supreme Judicial Court, to intervene — read it below. But it was denied, and Sullivan went ahead with the mistrial Friday afternoon.

Now that a mistrial has been declared in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, when could her second trial be held?

Just after the jury left the courtroom Friday, Judge William Sullivan told the prosecution and defense what he’s thinking in terms of the timing of a second trial. And it sounds like he wants to move relatively quickly.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington said he’d like a ruling on his Rule 25(b)(2) motion, which is required to be filed within five days of when the jury is dismissed. Assuming that is rejected, Reddington said he would request that a jury be empaneled “the following Monday.”

After the mistrial in Lindsay Clancy’s murder case Friday, a statement was released on behalf of her ex-husband Patrick calling the prospect of a new trial “extraordinarily painful.”

Patrick Clancy is thankful for the work of the court and jurors, the brief statement said, going on to mention the irrevocable loss of his children and how painful it would be for him and his family to live through another trial.

President Donald Trump has offered his take on the Lindsay Clancy mistrial, saying at an Oval Office event Friday that he’s kept up with the trial — “it’s hard not to follow. Followed it pretty much.”

“It’s a shame,” he said, calling it “a horrible tragedy” and said he assumes that, after the hung jury, there will be another trial. “It’s a terrible situation.”

“Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse, but you’ll find out what the price to pay is,” Trump said, likely a mental institution or jail. “But I guess they gotta go through another trial. It’s too bad.”

The Lindsay Clancy case has put a spotlight on postpartum psychosis, a rare psychiatric emergency that causes new mothers to completely break with reality.

Her sister, Jennifer, died by suicide at 33 soon after having her first child.

We’re off to a good start to this Labor Day Weekend! In fact, we’ve started this Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds.

By this afternoon, some of us will likely have to dodge a few widely scattered showers at times, all courtesy of a distant area of low pressure to our east. The flow around this system will keep a chance of showers and possibly an isolated storm around our region this afternoon into the early evening.

We’re not expecting a washout. However, a few brief heavy downpours are not out of the question today around central and eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.
