THERE’S ONE QUESTION I’VE GOTTEN more than any other from media and political types about the focus groups during the Trump era: What do swing voters think about [whatever the latest Washington scandal happens to be]. Maybe it’s some legal problem of Trump’s, or an ally America abandoned somewhere, or an unqualified nominee Trump selected, or any of the million other democracy-shattering scandals that have defined the last ten years of American politics.
The answer is almost always the same: They don’t. Generally speaking, voters who aren’t highly engaged news consumers don’t track Trump’s many scandals. There are like ten every day. What regular person has time for all that?
Swing voters might think ICE’s enforcement is a little bit harsh, but they give Trump credit for securing the border or for keeping “transgender ideology” out of our schools, whatever that means.
