"Five minutes each week that might change your life."
Extreme productivity is just socially acceptable self-harm.
Let’s say you set a goal to wake up at 5:30 every day.
You nail it for three days.
On the fourth day, you wake up at 5:35.
“Crap,” you think. “I failed.”
Well, no. That’s absurd.
Imagine applying that logic to the rest of your life:
- You take a wrong turn while driving, so you pull over and never drive again.
- You mispronounce a word, so you never speak again.
- You miss one gym session and decide to never go back.
You’re flogging your brain as punishment instead of accepting that’s just… how life goes.
And the steel-toed kicker?
Sometimes your body needs rest.
Maybe you needed that extra few minutes of sleep. Hell, maybe you’ll be more productive because of ‘em. You don’t get to vote on how tired you are.
In fact, research on diet and training consistently shows that flexible routines outperform rigid ones. Every workout plan includes rest days. Even elite athletes don’t train nonstop. Why?
Because burnout ruins progress.
So why the hell are you trying to be stricter than science?
It’s easy to mess up and spiral into, “Screw it, I give up.”
It’s harder—but infinitely more valuable—to say:
“That didn’t go as planned. I’m still in.”
See you Monday,
Mark
P.S. That voice telling you one slip means you've failed? It didn't come from nowhere. Therapy helps you understand where that voice comes from and why it's so loud—so that over time, you learn to hear it without obeying it.
