A single man in his 30s writes about the countercultural friendships he’s cultivated with a couple as a professional "third wheel." |
From audio editor Kevin Morris: When I got out of college and all my friends started getting married, I realized I likely wouldn’t be able to maintain the depth of my relationships with them if I didn’t learn how to spend time with couples. So I did, and despite the stigma of "third-wheeling," I found it far easier and more fulfilling than I’d expected. |
But I often heard people talk about the struggle of entering into or maintaining friendships with those in different life stages. Much of the perceived difficulty was based on assumptions or misconceptions. I started a podcast to talk about the topic, and my friends and I have used the platform to recommend to others what worked for us. |
Having Christ in common gives us a more-than-adequate foundation on which to build our friendships, so I jumped at the opportunity to write for Christianity Today on this subject. I work on CT’s media team, which is separate from its editorial arm, and it was a joy to get acquainted with different coworkers and contribute to a team that has contributed so much to my own life through the years. |

Did you know that over 50 million people live in modern-day slavery because of human trafficking? Every day traffickers target the most vulnerable, stealing them from their family and their future. Love Justice International is working on the front lines to stop human trafficking as it happens, sending monitors out to key transit hubs and training them to watch for warning signs. To date, LJI has helped keep more than 115,000 people free from trafficking. |
You can help LJI’s mission today by becoming an Intercept Partner. Your monthly gift will directly support their efforts to keep monitors in trafficking hot-spots and help ensure that more victims return home safely. Motivated by the gospel of Jesus Christ, LJI is committed to prayerfully stewarding every dollar given in order to make the most impact with each one. |

September 16, 681: The Third Council of Constantinople adjourns, having settled the Monothelite controversy in the Eastern Church. The Council, which proclaimed the orthodox belief of two wills in Christ: divine and human, condemned as heretics, the Monothelites, who believed Christ had only "one will," (see issue 51: Heresy in the Early Church). |

For our 70th anniversary issue, we’re studying the past. Excerpts from our archives show evangelicals in Billy Graham’s day and our own grappling with our place in public life. A new book offers a fascinating history of Christian womanhood—but makes a misleading argument, according to our reviewer. We’re also peering into the future. Artificial intelligence, GLP-1 drugs, anti-aging surgeries, next steps for the pro-life movement: These are some of the issues likely to occupy Christians for the next seven decades. But mostly, we’re spending time in the present: With a Honduran man who found himself pastoring in a Massachusetts jail while detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. With the evangelical owners of a traditional Korean spa engaged in a religious freedom showdown. With faithful believers doing good work—a chef, an architect, a ball boy, a teacher (who, at age 91, is older than CT!). And with the writers of our newly expanded testimony section, who found God’s faithfulness in the midst of alien conspiracies, after a bad accident, and via an envelope in a refrigerator. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amid our own era’s change, conflict, and uncertainty, we hope this issue declares that reassuring truth. |
