Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Hispanic Heritage Month started yesterday and runs through October 15th… which may have you asking, “Why the mid-month start date?” It isn’t arbitrary. September 15th actually marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, with Mexico’s following on the 16th and Chile’s on the 18th. In 1968, President Johnson began the observance as a single week which expanded to the entire month in 1988 under President Reagan. This time is meant to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central/South America—a population that makes up roughly 20% of the U.S. (~68 million people).

To mark the occasion, be intentional. Spend money at Latinx-owned businesses in your area or try to find Hispanic-founded brands to support online. Or seek out actual history by visiting the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Latino which has a growing collection of exhibits and programming or celebrate Dia de Muertos at the Met Cloisters. And above all, try to learn about the differences in culture and aesthetics in these 20-plus countries, instead of allowing them to be condensed into one. This month covers different histories and cultures that deserve distinction and understanding—even more than just celebration.

Beyond the Runway

Hispanic Heritage Month is a good excuse to refresh your fashion vocabulary. Latinx designers have long helped shape the industry, but the names worth knowing go far beyond the usual suspects. From Chicano tailoring and cult-status handbags to romantic Colombian dresses, these are a few designers we think deserve a spot on your radar (and maybe your wish list).

Willy Chavarria

If you’ve been paying attention to menswear lately, you already know the name. Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarria has become one of fashion’s most exciting voices, taking references from Chicano culture, workwear, streetwear, and classic American tailoring and blowing up the proportions. Think enormous trousers, strong shoulders, and suiting that makes an entrance. His recent Paris shows have only made it clearer: Chavarria is defining his own version of American fashion.

Known for: Oversized tailoring, statement outerwear, and menswear worth borrowing.

Raúl Lopez, Luar

You already know who he is even if you don’t recognize his name.. Dominican-American designer Raúl Lopez is the founder of Luar and the man behind the instantly recognizable Ana bag, but the accessories are only part of the story. Lopez mixes downtown New York energy with references to his Dominican heritage, creating clothing that feels glamorous, sharp, and a little unpredictable. If you like fashion that gets people asking where you got it, start here.

Known for: The Ana bag, sculptural silhouettes, and cool-girl accessories.

Johanna Ortiz

For the person whose vacation wardrobe is significantly more glamorous than her regular one, there’s Johanna Ortiz. The Colombian designer has built her label around bold prints, saturated color, dramatic ruffles, and dresses that demand somewhere fabulous to wear them. Her collections are designed in Colombia, with the country’s craftsmanship and tropical landscape serving as major influences.

Known for: Printed dresses, statement sleeves, and destination-wedding dressing.

Kika Vargas

Bogotá-born designer Kika Vargas is one to know if your taste leans romantic, but never overly sweet. Her exaggerated proportions, voluminous sleeves, unexpected prints, and sculptural dresses turn getting dressed into an event, even when the occasion is technically just dinner.

Known for: Big sleeves, bold volume, and statement dresses.

Patricio Campillo, Campillo

Keep Campillo on your radar. Mexican designer Patricio Campillo takes inspiration from Mexican culture and translates it through a distinctly modern lens, with sleek tailoring, dramatic shapes, and plenty of attention to texture. It’s minimalism with personality, and a great name to have in your back pocket when someone asks which designers you’re excited about right now.

Known for: Modern tailoring, sculptural silhouettes, and quietly cool menswear.

As a young journalist covering human trafficking and cartel violence along the U.S.–Mexico border, Codie Sanchez saw firsthand how money—or a lack of it—could determine the options available to someone. That realization would ultimately send her career in an entirely new direction. Now the Founder and CEO of Contrarian Thinking, Codie learned how wealthy people invest and businesses generate wealth upon leaving journalism for a career in finance with firms including Vanguard, Goldman Sachs, and State Street. Eventually, understanding the system wasn’t enough. She wanted to own something herself.

Today, she encourages other women to understand that financial independence isn’t just about negotiating a bigger salary, saving more, or building an investment portfolio. Ownership, Codie argues, can offer something even more valuable—greater control over your time, work, and choices. 

As Hispanic Heritage Month officially kicks off—and Codie gets ready to launch her new book Own, or Be Owned on Sept. 18th—we sat down with her to chat about her unconventional journey, how being a first-generation Latina shaped her perspective on opportunity, and the unwritten rules of money. 

You started your career as a journalist covering human trafficking in Mexico. What happened between that chapter of your life and deciding, “I want to own businesses”?

I went into journalism because I thought stories changed the world. I was 20-something, running around the U.S.–Mexico border covering human trafficking, drug smuggling, and the cartel wars. I saw women disappear into a system that barely noticed. I saw people who looked like me living completely different lives because they had no options.

And I started asking myself: What actually gives people options? The uncomfortable answe
