In an outrageous miscarriage of justice, a group of “antifa” activists were sentenced to decades in prison this summer following a protest outside ICE’s Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. The Intercept has already exposed significant holes in the government’s case, and several Prairieland defendants are now appealing their convictions. However, local authorities are refusing to hand over public records that may contain information relevant to the case, and we’re racking up legal expenses fighting to make them comply with open records laws. In fact, our legal department has already exhausted its budget for the entire year. To bring truth to light, we need an urgent influx of reader donations to ensure we have the funding to see this fight through. If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: One of the Prairieland defendants got 30 years for moving a box of leftist zines. Others did little more than wear all-black clothing and use the Signal app to communicate. It’s a grotesque injustice, and the Trump administration is trying to bring similarly bogus charges against other alleged “antifa” cells. Unfortunately, with our legal budget already spent for the year, we urgently need reader donations to help us continue our investigation into the Prairieland “antifa” convictions.
Thank you,
The Intercept team
