Attendance
Attendance at West Potomac Academy is recorded separately from attendance at your student’s base school. Because base schools do not share attendance information with the Academy, parents and guardians must report Academy absences directly to us.
Academy absences may be reported by:

Lunch Procedures
Lunch service and vending machines are not available at West Potomac Academy for traveling students. Students from other base schools attending the Mid-Day block should either bring a lunch from home or pick up a grab-and-go lunch from their base school before traveling to the Academy.
Transportation and Parking
FCPS provides shuttle transportation from base schools to West Potomac Academy, and students are expected to use the transportation provided.
Reserved Academy parking is limited to the small number of traveling students whose base schools do not provide shuttle transportation. West Potomac High School students are not eligible to use West Potomac Academy parking spaces.
Parking Restrictions
- Students may not park anywhere on the West Potomac campus, including visitor spaces, without an authorized West Potomac Academy parking pass and prior approval.
- Many surrounding neighborhood streets require residential parking permits, and towing is enforced.
- The church adjacent to West Potomac is private property and will tow unauthorized vehicles.
Parking restrictions will be strictly enforced during the 2026–27 school year. Unauthorized vehicles may be ticketed or towed.

JROTC
West Potomac JROTC hosted a Raider Competition on Saturday, welcoming 7 schools and 14 teams from across the DMV. Cadets competed in the Rope Bridge, Truck Pull, Litter Carry, Obstacle Course, and 5K Run events, demonstrating teamwork, strength, endurance, and determination.

Criminal Justice
The Fairfax County Police Department’s K9 Unit visited Criminal Justice students to showcase their K9 partners, explain the unit’s role, and share career opportunities within this specialized field.

Medical Assistant
There are 142 Medical Assisting students who are gaining valuable hands-on healthcare experience by supporting vision and hearing screenings at 25 FCPS schools.

Celebrating her sixth year at West Potomac Academy, Dr. Shaikh loves helping students turn classroom learning into real-world career experiences. One of the most rewarding parts of her work is watching students gain confidence, master complex skills, and build meaningful relationships with classmates from across different base schools.
Her proudest moments come when former students reach the goals they once talked about in class—whether that means earning their white coat, beginning a career in pharmacy, or even purchasing their first car with money earned working in the field.
Beyond pharmacy skills, Dr. Shaikh hopes students leave her classroom understanding the power of relationships and networking. The people you meet and the connections you build can open doors to opportunities you may never have expected.
And here’s something students and colleagues may not know: her very first job was as a Starbucks barista! ☕ Perhaps that explains why, outside of school, she enjoys exploring new coffee shops, along with spending time with family and friends and going to the movies.
