The 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks provided many meaningful opportunities for members of the Arlington County Police Department to come together with our fire, public safety and military partners to honor the nearly 3,000 innocent men, women and children who were taken from us that day and the thousands of responders who have passed from 9/11 illnesses in the years since, including our own Corporal Harvey Snook and Corporal Barry Foust. In this month’s News and Highlights from Across the Agency, Chief Penn reflects on Arlington County’s response to the terrorist attack at the Pentagon and the extraordinary teamwork, courage and resiliency demonstrated that day and in the weeks and months that followed. The publication also features investigative highlights, crime and crash statistics, community engagement efforts and department news.

Stories Behind the Badge: Crossing Guards: Providing Safe Passage To and From School
September’s latest Stories Behind the Badge installment showcased the individuals that ensure the safety of students, families and staff traveling to and from school; Crossing Guards.
Teresa Noonan, a crossing guard of 20 years, talks about the focus, dedication and quick-thinking it takes to control intersections during some of the busiest times of the day. Crossing Guards are integral parts of the school community and their commitment to transportation safety helps make the passage to school safer for all travelers. Watch here.

ACPD Shares Safety Tips Ahead of October's Pedestrian Safety Month
The school year is underway, bringing more students, families and community members onto our roads and sidewalks each day. As traffic patterns change and school zones become busier, a little extra patience and awareness can go a long way in helping everyone travel safely to and from their destinations. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 71,635 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2024 nationwide, a 5% increase from 68,241 pedestrians injured in 2023. The increase in pedestrian injuries highlights the continued need for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists alike to remain vigilant and practice safe behaviors on and around our roadways.
Follow these tips to make sure you and your loved ones make it to their destinations safely.

Follow the speed limit and avoid distractions.

Drive sober — alcohol use was reported in 46% of all fatal pedestrian crashes in the United States in 2023.

Always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

Look out for pedestrians everywhere and minimize blind spots.

Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. There may be people crossing where drivers can’t see.

Look both ways before crossing the street.

Whenever possible, cross a street in a designated crosswalk.

If there’s no sidewalk, always walk facing oncoming traffic.

When walking with children, always grasp their hands firmly to ensure they don’t break away and dart into traffic.
If You are Biking, or using any other mobility device:

Helmets are required for riders ages 14 and younger but are recommended for all.

Keep right and ride with traffic.

Secure your bicycle with a lock when not in use.
