President Donald Trump welcomed President Xi Jinping to the White House with ceremonies including military bands, flags and a flyover, ahead a state dinner later on Thursday. Despite the fanfare, the two leaders' talks are not expected to lead to significant breakthroughs. The day so far has brought a trade war truce extension until January and the promise of a student exchange. The display of pomp and pageantry, meanwhile, has attracted criticism from both Republican and Democratic politicians. But as our North America editor Sarah Smith explains in this video, Trump has made no secret of his admiration for Xi and other strongman leaders around the world.

AI hack harks back to tech's 'move fast and break things' era

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described a breach of a government website by OpenAI's rogue agents as "unacceptable", fuelling concerns about the growing power of the technology and adding urgency to talks about regulation.

Australia says it is carrying out an urgent review into whether any laws have been broken, but part of that rests on being able to prove intent – which OpenAI denies. And its government may have to ask itself some awkward questions about the strength of its cyber-security defences, including whether the healthcare data could have been better protected.

A popular solution to keeping the tech on the straight and narrow lies in two parts: slowing down the pace of its development, and implementing international regulation to police it.

AI is increasingly becoming a toxic brand, but in order to remind people of the benefits of the technology - and why it isn't facing an outright ban - the industry urgently needs some quick wins.
