Flint Hill Elementary is excited to celebrate Blue Star Ribbon Week! As a Purple Star designated school, we proudly recognize and support our military-connected students and families.

Throughout the week, students are invited to participate in themed spirit days as we honor the service, strength, and sacrifices of our military families and celebrate the diversity and belonging that make our school community special.

• Monday:  Team Shirt:  Wear a shirt for a favorite team because our military works together as a team.
• Tuesday:  Wear purple to support our military connected students.
• Wednesday:  Wear Red to remember everyone who is deployed
• Thursday:  Wear a hat to tip your hat to military connected families
• Friday:  Wear red white and blue, camouflage or a shirt from your favorite branch of service to show thanks to our military.

National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day is on Wednesday October 7^th!

Students are encouraged to be active by walking, biking, or rolling (scooter, skateboard, rollerblades, etc.) to school.  

For those that live further away, bus riders using mass transit and carpooling for kiss & ride are also great ways to participate and support our Get2Green Initiative.

Students will earn a small reward for participating in this event. 

We are excited to continue a special family-oriented way to teach about holidays and cultures this year!

Below is a link for a sign up with a list of holidays and national days/months through the year.  Please take a look at it to make sure we are covering the holidays that are important to your family and let us know if we may be missing some. 

Please record a short video (2-3 minutes) at home with your child to teach us about your holidays, traditions, heritage, and culture!  We want to be learning about all of the amazing traditions that make each family and student special, and believe it is vital to do so with authenticity.  We need your help!

Once you sign up, we will reach out with more details on how to record the videos, which you can create anytime from now until two days before the holiday!  These videos will be featured on the FHES News Show and teachers have the option to use them on the day of the holiday, as well.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.

Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

• Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
• Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.

FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.

• All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
• Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
• Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Ross Baker, School Testing Coordinator, at RHBaker@fcps.edu by September 30.

Families are invited to attend our Fall AAP Information Meeting, led by Stephanie Altounian, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) on Thursday, October 8^th from 2:30-3:30 PM in the school library. It will cover the AAP continuum of services as well as the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services. Share Your Stories of Disability and Inclusion

In early December, Flint Hill will celebrate Inclusion Week, which promotes an inclusive school community for students of all abilities and backgrounds.

This year, we hope to highlight the experiences and perspectives of Flint Hill students and families related to disability and inclusion.

If you are interested in submitting a brief video or quote about a personal experience with disability or inclusion to be shared with students, know someone who may be interested in serving as a guest speaker, or have a suggested topic or experience please complete this google form by October 22^nd. 

Join us for a series of Community Conversations that will be held across the school division. Share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. Click on the date to register for any of the following events:

• Monday, September 28, at 6:30 p.m., at Riverside Elementary School
• Monday, October 19, at 6:30 p.m., at Spring Hill Elementary School
• Monday, October 26, at 6:30 p.m., at Beech Tree Elementary School
• Thursday, October 29, at 6:30 p.m., at North Springfield Elementary School
• Friday, November 13, at 6:30 p.m., at Powell Elementary School

Registration is not required, but it helps with planning.

Good communication between home and school is vital to a successful school experience for each child. Questions relating to your child should be directed to the classroom teacher. All teachers have voice mail and an e-mail address. The school has a web page that links directly to each teacher’s e-mail.

Each year, FCPS produces a Handbook for its FCPS families. It contains valuable information you may need throughout the year, including calendars, services, and special programs, the instructional program, and information about starting school. Flint Hill Elementary has produced a handbook that includes some additional notes that are important for our school community.

!According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost. 

Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Access the application and view criteria on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage

Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
