Why do I love actor Betty Gilpin? Let me count the ways: GLOW. The Hunt. American Primeval. Death by Lightning. Widow’s Bay. Oh, Mary! And — especially — Mrs. Davis. Given that I’ve been all in on this woman since she started showing up Nurse Jackie way back in ‘13, how is it possible that I didn’t know she published a whole-ass book of essays four years ago? And that she reads the audiobook? In All the Women in My Brain: And Other Concerns, Gilpin shows herself to be just as smart, funny and clear-eyed about herself and Hollywood as you already told yourself she would be. She’s a terrific writer, too, with a penchant for colorful figurative language; the chonky metaphors come at you so fast and furious they’re thick on the ground by Chapter 2. But they’re a lot of fun, and on the audiobook she sells every last one with style for days.
The Off-Broadway show Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody may, as a concept, radiate an air of inevitability, but don’t dismiss it as a lazy, one-note joke. The recently released Original Cast Album is full of insanely catchy songs with lyrics that keep bringing you up short with their clever, knowing specificity. Take “Gym Song,” wherein Shane and Ilya straddle stationary bikes and pedal their way into each other’s hearts, and shorts. “It’s Friday night and it’s gettin’ hot / At the local Marriott / But when I walk in, an invisible pull / Just past the elliptical / Glances locked, just like a movie / TV’s playin’ … Judge Judy / Turn up the bass let the lights dim cause we’re / Eye-[redacted because this is an NPR newsletter] at the hotel gym.” The whole show’s great and strikes an artisanal mix of affection for, and mockery of, the source material. Dylan MarcAurele did the show’s book, music, lyrics and orchestrations; do they give Nobel Prizes for busting out a perfect Judge Judy reference? And if not, why not? |
