You can recognize French on the page much more easily than you can understand it when someone speaks.

Spoken French moves quickly. Words run together, sounds disappear, and expressions don't always sound the way you expect from the written language.

One course I've recommended for years for exactly this problem is Camille Chevalier's À Moi Paris audio program.

What I especially like about it is that the lessons combine:

• Natural spoken French
• Stories and dialogues
• Vocabulary and grammar explanations
• Audio recorded at different speeds

That makes it much easier to work your way from slower, clearer French toward normal native speech.
