No Not Me: In almost exactly four years, the same electorate that is poised to hand dems full control of congress today will be equally as eager to deliver control of congress to the gop. It does not matter what they do or what they say. This is the nature of the two party system in the us. Unless we admit a profusion of new states, we will be on the knife’s edge of a permanent right wing dictatorship. How do we get through to the people who are about to be newly seated that, while they can almost certainly not keep their seats longer than four years, they can deliver the country from the prospect of being never more than four years away from a coin flip election that could result in a fully permanent right wing dictatorship? Step one is for leaders to be willing to treat frontline members like soldiers, rather than delicate flowers. I’d encourage anyone who missed it to read the mailbag I wrote two weeks ago on this problem. One thing you can do is convey to the party’s leaders a specific frustration with this coddling aspect of their leadership. If you live in a swing state, you can help by telling your candidates (or, when they win, members) that you expect them to act in the best interests of the whole democracy, not in the best interests of themselves and their career dreams. Obviously they will represent districts or states, and the policy needs of their constituents will vary.
