Why does our country’s pre-eminent political elder statesman keep helping the radicals who are trying to seize control of his party? We live in strange political times but one especially odd phenomenon is the former president who occasionally ventures out in public to urge Democrats to reject wacky ideas—and then supports the candidates who promote them. Michigan Democrats have announced that former President Barack Obama will appear in Detroit on Oct. 24 at a campaign event with U.S. Senate candidate Abdul
El-Sayed. Craig Mauger notes in the Detroit News: The U.S. Senate race between El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health official, and Republican Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative from White Lake Township, will help determine whether Democrats win back control of Congress. Two weeks before the Obama arrival, tonight’s the night for both candidates to describe their differences. Arit John writes in USA Today: Michigan’s first U.S. Senate debate Oct. 8 will serve as a major test for Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed as he seeks to unify his party and prove that a progressive can win a battleground state.
