Turning 65? Here's What You Need to Know About VA, Medicare, and TRICARE For Life

Veterans, Caregivers, and Survivors:
If you're approaching age 65, now is the time to understand how your VA health care benefits work alongside Medicare and TRICARE For Life (TFL). The right combination depends on your individual needs, but timing matters.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Your Medicare enrollment window is limited. It runs from three months before to three months after the month you turn 65. Missing it can mean a lifelong penalty on your Part B premium. If you've already missed your window, contact Social Security to ask about a Special or General Enrollment Period.
- VA is its own system. There is no enrollment fee for Veterans, and VA does not bill Medicare or TFL for care you receive at VA.
- TFL fills the gaps. Once active, TRICARE For Life can cover deductibles, copays, and services Medicare alone does not, such as routine eye exams.
- Enrolling in one does not cancel the other. VA health care, Medicare, and TFL can work together.
Quick checklist:
- Confirm your VA health care benefits by logging into your VA.gov account or by calling 1-877-222-8387.
- If you're not yet enrolled in VA health care, apply using VA Form 10-10EZ online, by phone, or by mail.
- Confirm your TRICARE For Life eligibility in DEERS at 1-800-538-9552 or online.
- Check your Medicare Part A and Part B timing at 1-800-772-1213 or [ssa.gov/medicare].
- Still working at 65? Check with your employer's benefits office before delaying Part B enrollment.
