At our awards ceremony in Hintze Hall, we've just announced Italian photographer Federico Veronesi as this year's Grand Title winner.

Federico's image captures the powerful moment an elephant carries a dead calf, offering a rare glimpse into complex animal behaviours.

The female elephant carries a calf, with its leg wedged between her tusk and trunk. Some researchers suggest this could indicate an elephant's journey toward understanding death, while others interpret these actions as possible displays of grief.

Speaking about his image, Federico says it "gives us the possibility to understand and portray the depth of the elephant's feelings and emotions. It was a universal story of a mother trying to defeat fate and defeat death".

Oscar Whitfield is our Young Grand Title winner with this image taken in Zambezi National Park of a dung beetle pushing its precious cargo.

Using a fast shutter speed and high light sensitivity, Oscar lay flat on the ground to photograph the beetle at eye level - the dry dust all around him.
