HHS offers Medicare, Medicaid flexibility amid LA wildfires

HHS has declared a public health emergency in California because of the Los Angeles County wildfires, which have burned more than 40,000 acres and caused at least 24 deaths. The declaration allows greater latitude for Medicare and Medicaid providers and suppliers, and the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response is ready to deploy medical supplies and personnel as needed.

Oregon has expanded its Medicaid program to provide health coverage and additional benefits for certain young adults ages 19-20 with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities. The goal is to improve health outcomes and reduce inequities. "As people with special health care needs age, they can face changes in insurance coverage that disrupt access to essential care," said Steph Jarem of the Oregon Health Authority. "Our goal is to increase access to affordable care and bridge the gap between pediatric and adult care."
