Several new studies highlight factors that influence teacher retention and recruitment, emphasizing the importance of starting salaries, working conditions and flexible job arrangements. A study by Quentin Brummet of NORC at the University of Chicago found that starting salaries have long-term effects, with teachers in the lowest pay quartile earning significantly less over time, while another study by Sofia Baker of the University of Missouri shows that working conditions for teachers have worsened since the pandemic.
Many school districts have yet to provide professional development on AI, but experts say any guidance is beneficial. The Indiana General Assembly is considering a range of education bills this session, including measures on youth social media use, literacy endorsement, school funding and teacher compensation. Notable bills include Senate Bill 11, which requires parental consent for those under 16 to use social media, and Senate Bill 213, which sets a minimum teacher salary of $65,000.
Fresno Unified School District is turning public schools into community schools, with 19 schools offering services such as clothing, food and parenting classes. Jackson Elementary's community school coordinator, Emma Chavez, has been instrumental in helping families, but the sustainability of the program is uncertain as state funding may not last beyond five years.
