Dietary Health
Certain supplement combinations can lead to reduced effectiveness or adverse health effects, according to registered dietitians. Zinc and calcium, iron and zinc, and iron and calcium compete for absorption, necessitating a gap of at least two hours gap between doses. St. John's wort should not be combined with antidepressant medications, serotonergic supplements or ginseng due to risks of excessive serotonin levels. Ginkgo biloba and high-dose fish oil both thin the blood, increasing bleeding risks when taken together. A study led by Washington State University has found that elderberry juice can significantly improve weight management and metabolic health. The clinical trial, published in the journal Nutrients, involved 18 adults with overweight who consumed 12 ounces of elderberry juice daily. Results showed enhanced gut microbiome, improved glucose tolerance and increased fat oxidation. The juice's high anthocyanin content, known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties, is credited for these benefits. "This study contributes to a growing body of evidence that elderberry, which has been used as a folk remedy for centuries, has numerous benefits for metabolic as well as prebiotic health," said study co-author Patrick Solverson.
