Cold weather significantly elevates heart attack risk, according to a study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Short-term exposure to low temperatures is linked to higher hospitalization rates for myocardial infarction, with the most significant effect occurring two to six days after exposure. Cardiologists warn that typical winter activities like snow shoveling pose particular dangers to heart patients.
A study published in Nature Human Behavior has found that loneliness and social isolation can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes by affecting proteins related to inflammation and immune response. The study, which analyzed blood samples from more than 42,000 adults, identified proteins such as ADM and ASGR1 as being linked to these health issues.
