Good morning, DMV. It’s Wednesday, Jan. 15. Last week, after my daughter asked me how to build an igloo’s doorway — as the igloo goes up or cut into the structure after it’s finished — I turned the question to you. Here’s how you responded: A. You make room for the door as you build the walls of the igloo. — 466 of you voted for this technique B. You build the igloo and then cut out a door. — 198 voted for this one I posed the same question to Luca Roncoroni, the creative director at Sweden’s Icehotel, which is sculpted each year out of massive ice blocks. While Icehotel itself does not build traditional igloos (i.e., using snow blocks), Luca has built igloos in the past and shared these thoughts. “Personally I think it is easier to use the traditional technique, which is to cut the door after the igloo is finished, and I think it is also easier to build stronger and prettier shapes (the door in place would make it more challenging to place the blocks in a ‘spiral-pattern,’ building upwards),” he said in an email. “There are many videos online, but I still love this old movie from Inuit in Canada, where one can see how they built the igloo.” I also emailed and called the organizer of an Inuit snow festival in Canada, but sadly I didn’t hear back. ☀️ Capital Weather Gang daily digit: 3/10.
