Bonjour,
Monocle is now open for business at 16 Rue Bachaumont. Stop by for a coffee and a croissant, accompanied by the morning papers, or linger long into the evening over a nightcap.

Our Parisian presence is in Montorgueil, a village-like neighbourhood near the French capital's historic market district. Monocle’s café and bar team works with the Ten Belles roastery and bakery, who deliver quiche and coffee beans to us daily, while our Japanese-style sandwiches are courtesy of chef Walter Ishizuka’s Yabaï Sando on the Rive Gauche. Terroirs d’Avenir, our neighbour on Rue du Nil, bakes our bread and selection of viennoiseries.
The Monocle Shop is stocked with travel essentials and our latest collaborations with brands that we love from France and beyond. Our newsstand, meanwhile, offers the latest editions of Monocle and its sister magazine, Konfekt, alongside a wide range of top titles from the French and international media. “We want to create a community of locals and visitors around the best journalism,” says Loriane Ribera, the manager of the Paris shop and café. Lire plus. Vivre mieux.
Monocle is open from 08.00 to 22.00 at 16 Rue Bachaumont, 75002 Paris. Magazine subscribers get 10 per cent off in store and online. Come and say hello.

How Paris-based firm Kann Design brought Monocle to life
Monocle doesn’t just write about great cafés and retail spaces – we invest in our own. Houssam Kanaan, Meghedi Simonian and Rudy Bou Chebel are the co-founders of Kann Design, the Paris-based interiors firm that brought Monocle to life in the French capital. Here, Kanaan and Simonian share a few guiding principles behind their work on the building.
When it came to designing Monocle’s newest space, where did you start? Meghedi Simonian: To create a cosy atmosphere, we installed light oak panelling throughout the space. Our firm is an extension of the cabinet-making workshop that Houssam’s father started in 1958, in the Lebanese village of Beit Chabab, which is well known for its artisans and its church-bell foundry. Woodworking is our speciality.
How does design enhance good hospitality? Houssam Kanaan: A space should be warm, functional and discreet. The heart of the new outpost is the café, which serves as a melting pot. We wanted to create a strong link between this area and the retail space with a simple, welcoming design. We achieved this using our Plan shelving system, designed by Formel Studio, which we adapted for different functions in the kiosk and shop.
What excited you most about this project? HK: Bringing Monocle into a space that is different from the brand’s shops and cafés in other cities. The Rue Bachaumont site has the classic Paris retail layout with an open, rectangular space followed by a corridor linking it to the arrière boutique [back of the shop]. We wanted to use the full area to spark curiosity and invite customers in.
