I want to say at the outset how embarrassing it is to write about this incident. However, in our defense, my husband John and I had lived in the city our whole lives and were completely clueless about life in the animal world.
John and I were in our twenties when we moved to an upscale condo development complete with canals and interlocking ponds surrounded by gardens with walking paths. One fine October morning, we were strolling along beside a duck pond when we heard frantic squawking.
