Dear Key Middle School Families,
I want to make you aware of an incident that took place in the hall today right before dismissal, if your child has not already shared this information with you.
Two students were involved in an altercation that was witnessed by several students. Some of those students chose to gather around and record the event. As we review security footage of the incident, we will be contacting families of bystanding students who gathered and filmed the incident. The video of the incident was shared very quickly and many students had the recording prior to leaving school, which negatively adds to the impact of this situation.
First and foremost, the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. We take these situations very seriously. While the investigation is ongoing, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken for the students directly involved. Every student has the right to be safe in school.
Please take the time to speak to your student about making good choices while using social media. Sharing these types of videos is not only inappropriate, but may also have disciplinary consequences. I would suggest that you check your child's device for recordings or videos sent through text messages, group chats, and other social media platforms. I also ask you to remind them if they have information about a situation that could impact the safety of any student, they should speak to you or a trusted adult as soon as possible.
FCPS Office of Safety and Security also has a safety tip line that you can access anonymously online, by text, or by phone.
If your child is expressing anxiety about what they saw or heard today, we have support staff available to speak with them or provide resources to help you support your child. You or your child can reach out to any member of our Student Services or Administrative team.
Together, we can keep Key Middle School a safe place for students to learn every day. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any additional questions or concerns.
