Manager Alex Cora was running from one meeting to another before the Red Sox’ 8-3 win over the Mariners on Tuesday night.
The details in the pitchers meeting needed to be hammered out, with Brayan Bello making his regular-season debut after starting the year on the injured list.
A consistent voice in those meetings all season has been catcher Carlos Narváez, and he’s been a stronger presence since Connor Wong went down with a broken left pinkie finger.
Narváez’s message for Bello was straightforward.
“First day after everything he went through, the most important thing for us is he got the feel for the game,” Narváez said. “Don’t try to be perfect. Be calm instead of trying to be too perfect.”
In his return, Bello gave the Sox five innings of one-run ball, never straying far from his strengths. He fed the Mariners heavy doses of his slider and sinker, stayed composed when he found himself in tight spots, and picked up the win.
