Farewell Note from Kelly Drinnen

Hello fellow educators!

As the manager of this list for the past 20 years, it's been my pleasure to serve as a resource for you all in finding helpful information about Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, coral reefs, marine science, and the environment. I hope the items I've shared over the years have inspired, informed, and assisted you in making meaningful connections with our wonderful ocean and the students you are teaching.

I will be retiring from the sanctuary on April 30 and will miss this opportunity to pass along items of interest. However, I'm leaving the list in very capable hands. Taylor Galaviz will be the new face behind these entries.

Best fishes,
Kelly Drinnen

TONIGHT:  Garden in the Gulf - Watch Party

Thursday, April 24 | Doors Open at 6:30 p.m. | Free Admission

‍Moody Gardens is hosting a public watch party for the premiere of “Garden in the Gulf: A Reef Rescue Mission” airing on KPRC 2. This one-hour TV special highlights vital coral reef conservation efforts by the Moody Gardens Dive Team, in collaboration with NOAA, to help preserve Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf.

Viewers will gain insight into the progress being made to protect these reefs, uncover the environmental stories hidden within coral cores, and explore the challenges posed by invasive species like lionfish. These ongoing conservation efforts could help rehabilitate living coral reefs around the world, which continue to suffer from the impacts of a growing global population and a changing climate.

Special guests include KPRC 2 Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez and Moody Gardens Director of Marine Operations Jake Emmert, who will be in attendance to share more about the making of the special with guests and the important work being done to preserve our Gulf ecosystems. Sanctuary staff will also be in attendance.

Light refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase.
Pre-registration is highly encouraged.

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary Poster

Beneath the cold, blue waters of the sanctuary lies a different world, rich in diverse habitats, abundant marine life, and history. The Coastal Treaty Tribes have stood sentinel over these waters for millennia. Working together with partners, the sanctuary’s mission is to protect this area now and for future generations. This is done through resource protection, research and monitoring, and education and outreach.
