To abortion opponents, a woman is nothing more than a vessel. This view is evident in the anti-abortion movement’s relentless pursuit of giving fetuses the same rights as human beings; in its dismissal of the inconvenient truth that abortion bans have killed pregnant people; in its refusal to support policies that would make it easier for Americans to choose to parent. And now this view is embodied literally by Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old Georgia woman whose family says that a hospital has been keeping her alive for months on a ventilator, brain-dead, against their wishes — all because of Georgia’s six-week abortion ban.
