When I was a newborn I’m pretty sure my father didn’t present me for inspection before deciding whether to accept me into the household (thanks, dad!) The abandonment of this ceremony, common in ancient Athens, is one (admittedly extreme) way in which modern fathers have it better than their forebears. But, as our piece on fatherhood notes, not all get to enjoy the blessings of greater equality. 

Elsewhere, we examine a disconcerting trend: as Western broadcasters reduce their presence abroad, particularly in the global south, China and Russia are increasing theirs. Often they are spreading disinformation.
