As I wait for my connecting flight back to NYC, just some quick political news that you may have seen. I wanted to mention it because I find it encouraging. The Supreme Court rulled that migrants could not be legally deported under the Alien Enemies Act, the centuries-old wartime law invoked by the Trump administration. Big blow to Trump Judges that are ruling against Trump are being barraged with abuse and threats. This is not encouraghing, as much as it points to how threatened they feel. I worry about the judges. Also, we need to notice that the media is reporting it, at least the Guardian is. Bruce Springsteen spoke strongly against Trump during the first night of his European tour, and Trump posted a scathing rant against the singer on social media. He got under his skin. But let’s not get distracted by that. I would say that I hope more public singers come out and voice loudly the threat Trump poses. We can’t be bystanders right now. On the flight today, I listened to Timothy Snyer’s book, On Tyranny. Please read it, it’s short and powerful. It’s perfectly possible that Trump will try to create an “enmergency” in the next year so that he stop the midterm elections. Make your plans with friends for the next protest, wherever it is near you. I find Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Arab Emirates disgusting. He does it because he thinks it makes him look strong; Europe hates him. These guys love him, or at least they know how to pander to him. It’s all about making money, period, and not respecting women. I also recommend you read Heather Cox Richardson’s post today, it’s full of good information— but then it always is. I am in Boston airport and it’s really noisy, so I’ll sign off and see you tomorrow. Thanks for being here! You guys are the best, and I look forward to being more connected now that I am back on American soil. You're currently a free subscriber to Seeing Things.
