Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., announced that he would not run for re-election after he voted against advancing a sweeping bill for President Donald Trump's agenda.

Trump threatened to meet with potential primary challengers to Tillis after the two-term senator's vote. Tillis' seat in battleground North Carolina was already a top target for Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections.
