On the campaign trail, U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. But the peace he promised has proved elusive, and this week, Trump threatened to impose additional sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin does not agree to a cease-fire within 50 days.

Trump is not the first American leader to try to resolve a foreign war, but he “has taken a very different approach to mediation from that of his predecessors,” writes Timothy Naftali in a recent essay for Foreign Affairs. The U.S. president has not built a “reputation for fairness,” and he seeks gains for the United States beyond “the goal of regional peace and security.” Although “committing the prestige of the world’s strongest superpower to a peace process” usually increases the odds of reaching a deal, Naftali writes, it is “no guarantee of success.”
