Little is known about how or why a train derailed at Clifton Hill a week ago, impacting thousands of commuters on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines.
 

Chief Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau Angus Mitchell is leading an investigation into the incident and said work was done on the tracks in the weeks before the derailment.
 

He told Justin Smith on Mornings that there was sparking on the line after the train derailed.

Fatbergs are a lumpy mass of waste matter that forms in a sewer system and are made up of a combination of flushed non-biodegradable solids (such as wet wipes) with fat, oil, and grease deposits.
