Good morning, Chicago. I’ve often thought of the Red Line as the Wild West because it’s the train line where I’ve seen the oddest, most sensational things. It’s the CTA’s most heavily traveled route, so this week’s reopening of four stations no doubt is good news for a lot of Red Line riders. Was the renovation work worth the wait? The Tribune Editorial Board gives us a short and sweet tour of the buffed-up stations, with some thoughts thrown about the upzoning plans for Broadway. In its other piece today, the board applauds Cook County Democrats for not anointing a candidate in the U.S. Senate race to replace the retiring Dick Durbin. “We’re glad the Democratic powers that be decided — albeit, not unanimously — that this momentous occasion should be left to the people,” the board writes. In commentary, two writers focus on blue-collar concerns. The head of a trucking trade association applauds the Trump administration’s funding of infrastructure to help truckers find safe, legal places to park overnight, and a data scientist explains why old-school manufacturing is not going to see a resurgence in the U.S. In his latest column, foreign affairs writer Daniel DePetris examines the changing relationship between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And our letter writers have quite a few thoughts to share about the editorial board’s reaction to the social media frenzy over the “kiss cam” couple. Want to write us a letter?
