Hey ForbesBLK, Ayisha Mendez here.

Fashion has always been a medium for storytelling. It honors heritage, expresses identity, and challenges existing narratives. However, every season the fashion industry navigates a delicate balance between cultural appropriation and appreciation. Recently, one collection appears to have managed to strike this balance effectively.

The new Oak Bluffs collection by Polo Ralph Lauren has captivated social media, not just for its aesthetics, but for its purpose. The apparel is rooted in the legacy of Matha’s Vineyard’s Oak Bluffs neighborhood and celebrates “the power of community, the importance of tradition, and the enduring human need for places we can truly be ourselves.”

In collaboration with Morehouse College and Spelman College, the collection also “honors Black excellence through intentional design and storytelling,” aligning with Ralph Lauren’s continued investment in underrepresented narratives. But while it’s commendable to see Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) at the center of global fashion storytelling, the conversation online and within our community reminds us that representation is only the first step. The long-term sustainability of Black-owned brands, such as the recently closed and beloved inclusive beauty brand Ami Colé, proves that we need deeper investment in Black creatives.

That’s why ForbesBLK’s series, The Yard to Market, matters. Led by Forbes HBCU Scholar and Howard legacy Zoe Cummings, the column highlights alumni entrepreneurs building generation wealth and reshaping industries. Her latest profile on Market Mover Legacy History Pride founder Tahir Murray spotlights how HBCU pride is fueling premium, mission-driven business.

This fall, Forbes will deepen its commitment to HBCU communities by bringing the 2025 ForbesBLK Summit to Morehouse. The event will feature an HBCU alumni marketplace, small business showcases, and space for real economic exchange. If you know an HBCU entrepreneur making moves, encourage them to apply here for a chance to be featured in the marketplace.
