Good morning. Thomas Morgan here with your AM NewsMail. It's not just the common cold — that's what the parents of one young girl are pleading for others to understand after a horrific six-month bout of the flu.
Also making headlines, talks on Gaza stall as aid trucks line up on Israel's border with the enclave. Plus, we look at why the six-year-old appointed to choose the Dalai Lama's successor has been missing for three decades, and give you the chance to test your news knowledge with our weekly quiz.

Here's what you need to know today
|
Influenza B: One missed vaccine was all it took to leave eight-year-old Millie Campbell with multiple organ failure, fighting for her life. It was only because of the heroic work of doctors that Millie made it through six months in hospital.
This morning, Millie's mum is joining the chorus of parents urging others to make sure their children get vaccinated. "I don't think we really comprehended how severe influenza could be," she tells the ABC. Health experts are pleading for families to take this year's flu season seriously
as a strain that is particularly dangerous for children spreads.

The latest ABC exclusives, investigations and insights
|
'Walking corpses': An overnight breakdown in talks between Hamas, Israel and the US means there's little hope of a breakthrough in Gaza. The head of a UN aid agency is warning that one in five children in Gaza's largest city are malnourished, while 6,000 trucks full of aid are parked at the border, unable to enter the region.
Analysis with Michelle Grattan: Week one in parliament finds
Sussan Ley facing a difficult choice on net zero
, one that seems to have zero positives. As the Coalition fractures on the issue, Labor is also under pressure to move fast in the other direction.
Weight-loss surgery: Jess, who had a gastric sleeve inserted, is warning others considering the procedure that her experience "fixed my stomach, but it didn't fix my head". She is joining other patients and doctors in calling for mandatory screening for eating disorders before weight-loss surgery can go ahead.
Off-the-plan contract:
A Queensland family stands to lose $45,000 of their home deposit because they made a negative comment about their developer online. But Daniel McInnes is vowing to fight on, labelling Kinslake "unfair" for slugging them with damages.

Here's what else you should know this morning
|
- Trump v Musk: The US president has declared he wants Elon Musk's companies to "thrive". The softening language from Donald Trump comes a month after their bombastic falling out, and as his administration faces tough political headwinds over the Epstein files.
- Hulk Hogan: The wrestling star, who helped propel WWE into mainstream success in the 1980s, has died aged 71. The (literally) towering figure of wrestling
is being remembered for his generosity by those who knew him well, including Donald Trump.
- Idaho killer: It is the case that has gripped the US, but Bryan Kohberger has never offered a motive for why he killed four university students inside their off-campus home in 2022. Now those who knew him at work, through dating apps and in jail share what the convicted murderer is really like in person.

Quote of the day
|
| "The Dalai Lama is like the Sun to us, and the Panchen Lama is like the Moon."
| |
— That's Kyinzom Dhongdue, a Tibetan human rights activist, describing the role of Buddism's second-most-important leader.
Our South-East Asia correspondent Kathleen Calderwood has been
trying to hunt down Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who is tasked with one day choosing the next Dalai Lama.
There's just one problem — he hasn't been seen in three decades.
