In the wacky world of the major leagues, where the pay is good, the glory is great, and the travel and other accommodations are top-notch, there still is something about free T-shirts that revs up the Red Sox.
Among the themes of their season is a series of timely, creative, beloved-by-players shirts designed and delivered by Paul Procopio, a Pittsfield native and lifelong Sox fan who has become the team’s go-to source for the custom-made swag.
From Garrett Crochet’s “Beast” nickname to Romy Gonzalez’s impromptu “Tremendously Locked In” slogan to the Red Sox’ shared terrifying experience of “Turbulence” on one flight last month, Procopio has helped them frame the narrative of their season via clothes.
Consider it a physical manifestation of the camaraderie and vibes that have developed over the summer.
“I feel like we lead the league in T-shirts right now,” said hitting coach Peter Fatse, something of a ringleader in this accidental trend. “It’s one of those morale boosters over the course of a season. It’s a long year. When you have things like that that rejuvenate the guys, they see something new in their locker, it’s fun.”
