Dear readers, It’s been a while since I’ve had to pack for long-haul vacation reading. But like clockwork, as my departure date approaches I am tearing apart my shelves in search of a book or three that will make 15 hours on planes and in airports palatable — a tall order, even for someone who reads for a living. All this, when I really should be doing laundry. I have a few ideas. (Should I finally read A.S. Byatt’s masterpiece, “Possession”? Or maybe the Spanish psychological thriller a colleague recommended a while back?) But please consider this newsletter a call for suggestions. You can reach me by emailing books@nytimes.com. For the next two weeks, a few other editors will be writing this newsletter in my stead. I promise you will be in good hands. And by the time I return home, I’ll be thrilled to be back in book lovers’ company; god love my family, but they are largely a bunch that doesn’t understand reading for pleasure, let alone as a way to relax. If you are a goal-oriented reader, these last weeks of August are a prime opportunity to check off some items on our summer reading bucket list. I can almost guarantee that at least one of our suggested challenges will beckon: Looking for an audiobook? I love the audio version of Mona Awad’s freakishly delightful M.F.A. satire, “Bunny.” There have been so many great books translated this year — I can heartily recommend “The Colony” and “The Director.” See you after Labor Day.
