‘Putin is not somebody you can really trust': Ukrainians in Mass. react to summit |
All eyes were on Alaska Friday as President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump is trying to negotiate an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. But after more than three years of fighting since Putin’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainians living in Massachusetts are apprehensive of what might happen. Vsevolod Petriv, president of the Boston chapter of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, didn’t have high hopes that the summit between Russian and American leaders would lead to anything positive for Ukraine. |

Algae bloom means no swimming, boating in Webster Lake for days |
There’s no swimming, boating or Jet Skiing at a popular Massachusetts lake this weekend, a bummer for people who wanted to hit the water as the summer winds down. It’s especially important to keep kids and pets away from the water of Webster Lake, the Webster Health Department said in a public health advisory, including North Pond, Middle Pond and South Pond, because of harmful algal blooms reported in the water. The advisory is in place for days. “It’s kind of sad because we’re at the end of the season,” said lake resident Chris Daggett. “It’s been really quiet, like, eerily quiet.” |

| Sunny and warm today, steamy tomorrow and cool on Monday |
We’re still on a roll with these superb weekend forecasts. Sunshine will dominate over the next two days with a warming trend – that brings the steamy heat by Sunday. Highs today are summery, as well. Look for highs near 80 along the coast/Capes/Islands and mid/upper 80s elsewhere. Light sea breezes are expected at the beaches. There is also a slight chance at a storm in western New England this afternoon if you’re heading in that direction. |

| Boston, other ‘sanctuary jurisdictions' get immigration enforcement ultimatum |
The nation’s top law enforcement official is giving Boston and other so-called “sanctuary jurisdictions” several days to explain how they intend to eliminate any impediments to federal immigration enforcement. After last week identifying 35 “sanctuary jurisdictions” — places where local laws limit cooperation with federal immigration agents on deporting undocumented immigrants — Attorney General Pam Bondi sent letters to the leaders of most of those states and cities on Wednesday, telling them they have until Tuesday to confirm a commitment to compliance and any steps being taken to eliminate laws that impede federal actions. The letters didn’t identify what penalty the communities, which include three New England states — Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont — would face if they didn’t comply, noting only that more action was possible. |

Braintree needs win Saturday to stay alive in Little League World Series |
The boys of Braintree, Massachusetts, still have a shot at the Little League world title despite losing their first game by 13 runs Thursday. Braintree American plays again on Saturday. Little League has what is called double elimination, meaning if a team has a bad game on in round one, they can still advance. But they can’t lose any more games. Braintree right now is focused on Saturday. |
